Thanks to all of the hard work from our amazing staff, board and volunteers, everything went smoothly, from our 10th Annual Little Artist BIG ARTIST Show to our first ever Cultivate workshop to our 17th Cherrywood Art Fair! We are humbled by all of the supporters who came out to our events and helped us fuel and sustain the arts in East Austin!
We are thrilled to welcome you all to this year’s Cherrywood Art Fair this weekend, 10:00am – 5:00pm! We hope you’ll join us for two days of handmade gift shopping, live music, family friendly entertainment and delicious local eats! We have something for everyone at our beloved Cherrywood Art Fair, and you can feel great about helping us fuel and sustain the arts in East Austin. We are less than a week away from our beloved Cherrywood Art Fair. Yes, it’s this weekend, December 8th and 9th! Our jury cherry picked an eclectic array of artists and handmade businesses for this year’s event from a record number of applicants. We are excited about each and every one of them, and we’re sure you will find gifts for pretty much anyone on your holiday list, no matter your budget. In case you need some inspiration for your shopping, here is a list of handmade goodies under $50 that our artists will have for you to choose from. We’ll see you at Maplewood Elementary this weekend!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Austin, Texas)—November 20, 2018. Cherrywood Art Fair announces its 2018 lineup, packed full of live music + entertainment, family fun activities, local eats, and of course all the holiday shopping you can muster. On December 8 and 9, 93 Texas artists will share the grounds of Maplewood Elementary School with an all-female musical lineup on Saturday, and magic, storytelling, and dance on Sunday.
The School of Rock house band returns to kick off Cherrywood Art Fair with its holiday-themed set at noon on Saturday, followed by an infectiously danceable soul performance by KP and the Boom Boom at 1pm. At 2pm Brazilian Singer/Songwriter Paula Maya will deliver a multitude of genres such as bossa nova, jazz, and rock, followed by DJ Collective Chulita Vinyl Club ATX at 3pm. Rosie Flores will close out the stage on Saturday with an eclectic mix of tunes reminiscent of her long career which has spanned punk rock, rockabilly, and blues.
Sunday’s lineup packs all of the family fun including an exhilarating dance performance by the Austin Flamenco Academy, a captivating magic show from Magic by Carlos, an interactive ukulele workshop with Groundwork Music Project, bilingual songs and stories from Sue Young, and finally a classical Bharata Natyam showcase by Austin Dance India. The weekend lineup is curated by Sarah Rucker of Full Gallop, and this year Cherrywood Art Fair proudly welcomes The Austin Chronicle as the official Stage Sponsor.
On both days, Austin Creative ReUse will be
stocked with fun-filled holiday crafts in the Kids Art Corner. There will also be face painting forall ages by Mendez, Ruth Face and Body Art, Braids by Urban Betty, and on Saturday, Latinitas will run a “make your own maracas” table. On Sunday, Austin Bat Cave will be conducting “blackout poetry” with pages of text and black markers helping guide kids and families through the writing process
Refuel so you can stay all day! The Fair will host local food trucks and vendors like Jake HatesCoffee, Mmmpanadas, Nothing Bundt Cakes, OMG Squee, SRSLY Chocolate, Tamale Addiction, and The Dog Pound. Once you’re full, head on over to the biggest silent auction in Fair history, boasting merchandise and original artwork from each Cherrywood Art Fair artist. Lastly, don’t miss the opportunity to take a photo in Austin’s most unique photo booth, Amurica TX, housed in a converted canned ham trailer and stocked with holiday props.
Cherrywood Art Fair not only boasts a playful environment to shop for the holiday season, but it also strengthens local businesses, connects families, and supports aspiring young artists. Be sure to peruse Chula League’s Little Artist Auction during this year’s Fair. The proceeds from Cherrywood Art Fair benefit its host Maplewood Elementary School and Chula League’s Little Artist BIG ARTIST program, a free 10-week mentoring program pairing professional artists with East Austin 5th graders to turn ideas into art and art into business.

Can you believe it’s already November?! That means our beloved Cherrywood Art Fair is just a few weeks away, and we couldn’t be more excited! Our artists are getting ready to share all kinds of unique, handmade art with you, just in time for holiday gift giving. Of course, if you’re anxious to get a sneak preview of their work, you can see quite a few of our cherry picked vendors during EAST Austin Studio Tour. This uniquely Austin studio tour takes place the 2nd and 3rd weekend of November, and it’s free to attend. All you have to do is pick the artists you’d like to visit, either on the website or in the printed map which you can pick up at any Austin public libraries.

A record number of 280 artists submitted their applications to the 17th annual Cherrywood Art Fair and have been carefully reviewed by a jury of five esteemed leaders in the Austin creative community to curate a dynamic mix of 93 Texas makers for the 2018 Fair. This year the hallways and sidewalks of the historic Maplewood Elementary, in the beloved Cherrywood neighborhood, will be lined with a high-quality representation of goods such as handmade ceramics and pottery, eclectic art, stylish apparel, one-of-a-kind jewelry, natural skincare, playful pet products, and whimsical children’s merchandise. Jurors included Arielle Austin, Lauren Fair Cooke, Avery Orendorf, John Riedie, and Jay B Sauceda.
Cherrywood Art Fair not only boasts a playful environment to shop for the holiday season, it strengthens local businesses, connects families, and supports aspiring young artists. The proceeds from Cherrywood Art Fair benefit its host Maplewood Elementary School and Chula League’s Little Artist BIG ARTIST program, a 10-week mentoring program pairing professional artists with East Austin 5th and 6th graders to turn ideas into art and art into business.
“Chula League’s two major programs represent two of my major passions: providing free art programs to children, many of whom couldn’t afford it otherwise, and providing a quality, affordable art fair for artisans,” said Brandy Davis, Chula League Board Chair. “The proceeds from Cherrywood Art Fair directly fuels our Little Artist BIG ARTIST program which enables young children to express their creative voices in an increasingly complex world.”
Applications for the annual Cherrywood Art Fair are open to Texas artists and makers working in all mediums. Participants are selected by quality of work as assessed by the jury panel based on electronic images submitted by the artist. Also taken into account is a balance of media categories represented and a percentage of new artists each year. Cherrywood Art Fair only showcases original work and does not accept imports or mass produced items.

Pair your shopping experience with live music and family fun led by the Chulita Vinyl Club ATX, local eats from Mmmpanadas, Jack Hates Coffee, Nothing Bundt Cakes, The Dog Pound, Tamale Addiction, and more. The kiddos are sure to enjoy onsite crafts, face painting, hula hooping, and dancing. Both days will showcase a silent auction to benefit the nonprofit Chula League’s Little Artist BIG ARTIST program including goods from each participating CAF artist and artwork from the Little Artists who have participated in the mentorship program. It’s a great opportunity to score an original work, while supporting Chula League’s mission!
